The short answer: An overnight caregiver is an awake, certified caregiver in the home from roughly 8 PM to 8 AM — for the bathroom trips, the wandering, the fall at 3 AM, and the anxiety that only shows up in the dark. In Daytona Beach and across Volusia and Flagler Counties, TrustWise Care refers overnight caregivers at $34 an hour, flat: $272 for an eight-hour night, $340 for ten hours, $408 for twelve. No overnight surcharge, no minimum number of nights, no contract.
Families usually discover they need overnight care in one of three ways: a parent who is fine all day but gets up six times a night; a spouse who hasn't slept properly in months; or a hospital discharge where the doctor says "someone should be with her at night for a while." Here is what overnight care actually covers, what it costs, and how it compares to the alternatives.
What an overnight caregiver actually does
The job is to be awake so you don't have to be. Through the night the caregiver:
- Helps with every bathroom trip — the single most common cause of nighttime falls
- Repositions a bed-bound or frail client every couple of hours for skin health
- Responds to wandering, confusion, or a client who wakes convinced it's morning
- Gives quiet reassurance to someone who is anxious or in pain
- Handles the evening and morning routines on either end of the night: a light supper or snack, medication reminders, changing into nightclothes, then breakfast and dressing in the morning
- Keeps a simple log of the night — how many times up, what helped — and hands it to the family or the day caregiver
The caregiver stays awake. This is not live-in care, where a caregiver sleeps in the home and is only available for emergencies. If your parent needs someone alert at 3 AM, you want overnight care.
What overnight care costs in Volusia and Flagler Counties
Across the licensed local market, overnight rates run about $26 to $40 an hour, and several companies add a night differential or require a minimum number of nights per week. TrustWise Care charges the same $34 an hour, flat at night that it charges during the day.
| Night length | Typical hours | Cost per night | 3 nights a week | 7 nights a week |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 hours | 10 PM – 6 AM | $272 | $816 | $1,904 |
| 10 hours | 8 PM – 6 AM | $340 | $1,020 | $2,380 |
| 12 hours | 8 PM – 8 AM | $408 | $1,224 | $2,856 |
Those are the only numbers. There are no setup fees, no deposits, and no contract — book the nights you need and change them with one call.
For context: a private room in a Florida nursing home runs well over $10,000 a month, and assisted living commonly $5,900 or more. Three overnights a week — about $3,500 a month — is often the difference between a parent staying in her own home and not.
Overnight care vs. 24-hour care vs. live-in care
The three get confused constantly. They solve different problems:
| Overnight care | 24-hour care | Live-in care | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who is there | One awake caregiver, 8–12 hours | Awake caregivers in rotating shifts, all 24 hours | One caregiver who stays several days and sleeps in the home |
| Awake at 3 AM? | Yes | Yes | No — scheduled sleep |
| Best for | Nights are the problem; days are fine | Someone must be awake at all times | Familiar single caregiver; nights are generally quiet |
| Pricing | $34/hour flat | Quoted hourly after a schedule conversation | Quoted separately (multi-day arrangement) |
Our live-in vs. 24-hour care comparison goes deeper if you're weighing the last two.
When overnight care makes sense
After a hospital stay. The first one to three weeks home from Halifax Health or AdventHealth are when falls and readmissions happen, and most of them happen at night. A week or two of nightly coverage, then back to days only, is a common pattern. See our hospital discharge guide.
Dementia and sundowning. Confusion, agitation, and wandering peak in the evening and overnight. An awake caregiver who knows the person keeps the night calm — and keeps the spouse in bed. Our dementia care at home guide covers the whole picture.
Fall risk and nighttime bathroom trips. For a parent who is steady with help and unsteady without it, an overnight caregiver turns six risky trips into six safe ones.
The exhausted spouse. Two or three nights a week of real sleep changes a family caregiver's whole week. This is respite, and it works — see our respite care guide.
End of life. Alongside hospice, an overnight caregiver gives the family rest and a calm presence through the night.
What families ask us about overnight care
Does the caregiver need a bed? No — the caregiver is awake. A comfortable chair, a lamp, and access to the kitchen and bathroom are all that's needed.
Can the caregiver give medications at night? The caregiver can remind and observe; administering medication is a nursing task. For most families the evening pills are handled before the caregiver arrives or with a reminder at bedtime.
What if my parent won't accept a stranger at night? We introduce the caregiver during the day first, often for a short visit, and we keep the same caregiver on the nights whenever possible. Familiarity is what makes nights work.
Can we start with a few nights and see? Yes. No minimums, no contract. Many families start with two nights a week.
Who comes
Every caregiver TrustWise Care refers is a Florida-certified nursing assistant (CNA) or a home health aide with documented Florida training, has cleared a Level 2 fingerprint background screening, holds current CPR, has verified references, and has been reviewed by our RN Administrator before any referral.
